HJA Partcipates in Give Kids a Smile Day

Commissioner Kimberly Ricketts
Department of Children and Families
Joins HJA in Celebrating
Give Kids a Smile Day

On February 6th, Henry J. Austin Health Center participated in Give Kids a Smile Day (GKAS). GKAS is an annual centerpiece to National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) and is observed every year on the first Friday in February, while NCDHM is celebrated during the entire month of February. National Children's Dental Health Month focuses on providing oral health education to all children despite their economic status. Give Kids A Smile was designed to provide chair-side education, preventative and restorative care to low-income children who do not have access to care.

Austin Dentists Devon Goodwin, Adam Taylor, Magaili Santo and hygienist, Carolina Escobar, provided  fifty second graders from the nearby Grant School with an individual dental screening, a tour of the new Pediatrics Department and arts and crafts. Many thanks to Marge Dooley, Director of Nursing for Trenton schools, and teachers, Ms. Hofing-Rivas, Ms. Niver, Ms. Carral, Ms. Gonzalez and Lisette Davila, school nurse for making this happen.

Before joining State government, Commissioner Ricketts spent 13 years working with children and families in community, behavioral health and social service organizations in North Carolina, Florida and New Jersey.
